Air Pollution Continues Decline at Port of Long Beach
News ImageDiesel air pollution from ships, trucks, trains and other big machines at the Port of Long Beach has declined by 82 percent since 2005, a comprehensive air quality analysis has found. The report – which focus on 2013 – show seven straight years of steadily declining air pollution from goods movement in the harbor area.

Environmental Attorney Joins Harbor Commission
News ImageEnvironmental attorney and Long Beach resident Tracy Egoscue joined the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Sept. 16 as the first Commissioner appointed by Mayor Robert Garcia. She was approved by the City Council last week for a six-year term. Egoscue heads a Long Beach-based private law practice, and in the past was Executive Officer of the California Regional Water Quality Control Board – Los Angeles Region, and prior to that served as Executive Director of Santa Monica Baykeeper, an environmental advocacy group.

Cargo Numbers Slip in August
News ImageContainer cargo shipments declined by 9.1 percent in August at the Port of Long Beach, reflecting both early shipping by importers this year and the comparison to an August last year that was the Port’s busiest month since 2007.

Port Offers Discounts to Attract Cargo, Clean Air
News ImageThe Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved two incentives that officials expect will bring additional cargo to the Port while also encouraging the use of air pollution-reducing shore power and on-dock rail. The incentives are designed to help the Port compete with other West Coast ports that have already cut fees to grow their business.

Port Aids in Care for Mutilated Pelican
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach will donate $5,000 for the surgical and rehabilitative care of a California brown pelican found recently on the shoreline in Long Beach with a slashed pouch, a wound thought to be caused by someone with a knife or other sharp object.
