Ships "Plug In" to Cut Pollution

When ships dock at the Port of Long Beach, the vessels may be still but the activity actually speeds up. As cargo is loaded and off-loaded from a ship at berth, its pumps are running, lights are shining and machinery is humming. Traditionally all that motion has been powered by the vesselís auxiliary engines, which burn diesel fuel. But new efforts at the Port of Long Beach are changing that practice.

Advanced Scanners Improve Port Security

Port of Long Beach terminals are among the first seaport facilities in the nation to test improved security scanners that can better pinpoint potential sources of radiation in cargo containers. The new systems are part of the ongoing efforts by the Port and its security partners to continually upgrade technology and improve Port safety.

"Peak Season" Delivers the Goods

While most people arenít giving much thought to end-of-the-year holiday shopping quite yet, preparations are well underway at the Port of Long Beach. The clothing, electronics, shoes, toys and sporting goods that will be filling store shelves during the holidays are shipped through the Port in August, September and October, creating a cargo surge known as the "peak season."

Beyond the Waterfront

The Port of Long Beach was a major sponsor of this summerís Sea Festival, which brought such entertainment as the July 4th fireworks, Municipal Band concerts, AVP volleyball and many other events to the Long Beach community this summer. Port employees participated in many of the events and activities with giveaways and informational booths.
