Director of Construction Management
Port of Long Beach, California

Gary J. Cardamone is the Director of Construction Management for the Port of Long Beach, California. Joining the Port in 2002, he served as Deputy Chief Harbor Engineer in charge of construction management before being appointed to this newly-created position by the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners in July 2007.

As Director, he leads the Construction Management Division, part of the Port’s Engineering Bureau. He oversees construction of the Port’s Capital Improvement Program, valued at about $200 million annually, and the Surveys Section.

Before joining the Port as an employee, Mr. Cardamone was a consultant to the Port as Vice President of Construction Services for CH2M HILL. In that capacity, he managed the construction of the Port of Long Beach Pier T Container Terminal, a $500 million conversion of the former Naval Base and Shipyard into a new 375-acre, state-of-the-art mega terminal. The Pier T project has received numerous awards including the 2005 Project Achievement Award from the Construction Management Association of America’s (CMAA) Southern California Chapter for outstanding achievement in the practice of construction management.

Mr. Cardamone also served as Assistant Chief Harbor Engineer and Director of Construction Management for the Port of Los Angeles where he managed construction of the $600 million Pier 300/400 implementation program as well as the $170 million Pier 400 dredging and landfill project, the single largest dredging project ever undertaken in the United States at that time.

In his more than 25-year career in port and harbor-related development, he has managed more than $2 billion worth of improvements to Southern California ports.

Mr. Cardamone currently serves on the National Board of Directors and Executive Committee of CCMA and is Chairman of their Standards of Practice Committee. He was formerly a two-term President of CCMA’s Southern California Chapter, the first public sector owner to hold this position.

He was a co-recipient of the 2005 Engineering Achievement Award from the Los Angeles County Chapter of the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California (CELSOC) in recognition of his unique contribution to the cornerstone capital projects of Los Angeles County, and Mr. Cardamone was the honoree at the CMAA Southern California Chapter 2007 Annual Awards Banquet in appreciation of his efforts to promote the continued use and growth of construction management in Southern California. He is a frequent speaker for CMAA and the Western Council of Construction Consumers on topics including contract administration, cost management and constructability reviews. Gary Cardamone is a registered engineer in the State of California and received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Syracuse University.

The Port of Long Beach is one of the world’s premier seaports, a trail blazer in goods movement and environmental stewardship. Each year, trade valued at more than $140 billion moves through the Port of Long Beach, supporting more than 316,000 Southern California jobs. And with a Green Port Policy guiding all efforts, the Port is a catalyst for innovative programs to protect the environment.
