Port Trucking Fleet Cleans Up Its Act
News ImageWhite is a popular color for port trucks in 2010. This year, the Port of Long Beach marked a major Clean Trucks Program milestone by banning thousands of older more polluting trucks and replacing them mostly with the signature white rigs that now service the Port.

World's First Hybrid Tugboat to Get a Sibling
News ImageFoss Maritime Company, builder and operator of the world's first hybrid tugboat, will soon add another pioneering vessel to its Southern California fleet with the help of an air quality grant obtained by the Port of Long Beach. Building on the success of Foss’ Carolyn Dorothy hybrid tug, which was launched into service in 2009, Foss will retrofit an existing tug with hybrid technology, thanks to a $1 million grant from the California Air Resources Board.

Cordero to Lead Pacific Ports Group

The selection was announced at the group's recent annual conference in Stevenson, Wash. Cordero will be president of the association when Long Beach hosts the annual conference in 2011.

Port Air Quality Continues to Improve

Emergency Response Exercises May 18, 19
News ImageOn May 18 and 19, the U.S. Coast Guard will lead full-scale emergency response exercises in and around the Port of Long Beach and Port of Los Angeles. There will be no disruptions to Port operations, but customers, employees and neighbors are likely to witness unusual activities as early as Monday, May 17. You may hear sirens and see a large number of emergency response and military vehicles as well as vessels and helicopters.

Port Bonds Get High Marks
News ImagePort of Long Beach bonds have received high marks from all major credit rating agencies, a move that will lower the cost of borrowing and reflects the Port's strong financial position. The Port plans to issue $218 million in bonds to finance certain capital improvements and up to $354 million to pay outstanding debt and reduce debt costs in the coming months.

State-of-the-Art Rail Cars Arrive at Port
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach on March 2 helped Metrolink welcome two of its newest passenger rail cars. The cars, the first of their kind in the U.S., are equipped with Crash Energy Management technology that makes them safer in the event of a collission. A total of 117 cars, manufactured by Hyundai Rotem in South Korea, will be shipped through the Port of Long Beach's Crescent Terminal operated by SSA. Click here for more details from Metrolink.

Tsunami from Chile Tremor Has Little Impact on Port
News ImageSaturday's 8.8 magnitude earthquake in central Chile triggered a tsunami warning throughout most of the Pacific Ocean facing regions, including Southern California. The tsunami created strong currents in the Long Beach Harbor and ship traffic was halted for several hours on Saturday, but there were no reports of damages. A 2007 report showed that the Port faces a minimal risk of inundation by tsunami. Click here for report.

Port Trade Increases for 2nd Consecutive Month
News ImageAfter closing 2009 with the first increases in monthly container cargo numbers in two years, the Port of Long Beach reported a continued uptrend in trade for January. Imported cargo increased by nearly 9 percent in the first month of 2010 compared to the same period last year. Exports were up by 28 percent.

State Warns Barges to not Disturb Nesting Terns
News ImageThe state Department of Fish and Game reminds barge operators to be careful not to disturb nesting terns. The birds have already begun to nest in Long Beach Harbor. For more information, please see the Department of Fish and Game flier. Disturbing or harassing the birds, including moving the barge before nesting is complete, violates wildlife laws.

Environmental Documents for New Bridge Released
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach on February 4 released the revised draft environmental impact report for public comment on its next major improvement proposal -- replacing the aging Gerald Desmond Bridge. The report will be available for public review and comment for 45 days and the Port will host two public hearings to receive comments on the project.

Extra $9 million in Incentives Approved
News ImageThe Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on February 1 gave preliminary approval to nearly $9 million in extra incentives to further boost participation in the Green Flag air quality program and to increase the use of trains to move import and export cargo containers. Terminal operators will get $5.8 million to bring more rail borne cargo through the Port and vessel operators will get $3 million to slow down their ships in the harbor.

Five years of the Green Port Policy – A Port Transformed

The Port had been pursuing environmental programs, but the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners wanted more. It was time to firmly establish the commitment to cleaner, environmentally sustainable operations – to ensure that the Port would pursue both economic vitality and reduce its environmental impact.

Former Commissioner John Kashiwabara Dies at 88
News ImageDr. John Kashiwabara, who served on the Port of Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners from 1996 through 2002, has died. He was 88.
Dr. Kashiwabara was a family physician whose active civic involvement included several Long Beach organizations. He was appointed to the Harbor Commission by then Long Beach Mayor Beverly O'Neill. He was credited with helping the Port to attract commercial tenants after the U.S. Navy vacated its local facilities.
"Dr. John, as he was fondly known, was a remarkable man with remarkable qualities," said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Richard D. Steinke.

Commissioners ride in Martin Luther King Jr. Parade

Port Posts First Trade Increases Since ‘07
News ImageReversing a precipitous, extended trade decline, the Port of Long Beach in January reported the first increases in monthly container cargo numbers in two years. In an unexpected surge, imported cargo increased by more than 13 percent in December 2009 from the same time period a year ago, and exports jumped by more than 30 percent.

Commission President Sets Goals for 2010

Clean Trucks Program Nearing Major Milestone
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach Clean Trucks Program is on track to achieve dramatic air quality and road safety improvements as the ongoing changeover of the big-rigs that serve port terminals approaches a major milestone on January 1, 2010. As of the New Year, the Clean Trucks Program will have slashed air pollution from trucks in the Port by nearly 80 percent.

Study Finds Dramatic Air Quality Improvement
News ImageAir pollution from ships, locomotives, trucks and other Port-related sources dropped significantly from 2005 to 2008 -- including a 21 percent decrease in diesel particulate matter, according to a new air quality study released December 21. The biggest part of the improvement came thanks to cleaner technology, not from a slowdown in cargo. Thomas Fields Joins Board of Harbor Commissioners

Fields, an advertising executive, was appointed by Mayor Bob Foster and confirmed unanimously by the City Council. He is a former Long Beach planning commissioner and chair of the city's Redevelopment Agency Board. Colorado Lagoon Restoration Funding Approved
News ImageThe Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved a $1.3 million advance payment on December 14 to the City of Long Beach to help pay for the first phase of the Colorado Lagoon Restoration Project.
In other actions, the Board extended the successful Green Flag program for another year, and approved a plan to help truck drivers transition to the tougher environmental requirements scheduled for January 1, 2010.

Mayor Appoints New Harbor Commissioner
News ImageMayor Bob Foster on December 1st announced the appointment of advertising executive and former planning commissioner Thomas Fields to the Port of Long Beach's Board of Harbor Commissioners. If confirmed by the City Council, Fields would become the fifth and final member of the Port's governing board, filling a position that was vacated when former board president James Hankla retired in the summer.

Port, China Merchants Sign 'Green' Pact
News ImageIn a new "green port" collaboration, the Port of Long Beach and China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI), one of the world's largest operators of seaport terminals, have signed a comprehensive environmental exchange agreement to further "green" technologies and practices on both sides of the Pacific Ocean.
"This agreement recognizes that we are not only partners in trade, but partners in ideas and solutions that safeguard our environment," said Nick Sramek, Port of Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners President.

West Coast Ports/Rail lines Announce Collaboration
News ImageIn a historical first, six major U.S. West Coast ports and two western railroads came together at the World Shipping Summit in Qingdao, China, to announce their collaboration. They addressed leaders and customers of the maritime industry including ocean carriers, beneficial cargo owners and marine terminal and intermodal operators. Zero-Emission Ideas Move into Evaluation Stage

Port of Long Beach Settles Clean Trucks Lawsuit
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach has settled a lawsuit brought by the American Trucking Associations (ATA), resolving the final legal challenge to its year-old Clean Trucks Program. One of the Port’s most ambitious environmental initiatives, the program is already cutting truck-related pollution significantly and aims to reduce emissions 80 percent by 2012 or earlier.

Pre-payment of Clean Trucks Fee to End Nov. 15
News ImageEffective November 15, only importers and exporters using older, more polluting trucks to move cargo in and out of the Port will have to pre-pay fees under the Port of Long Beach's Clean Trucks Program. The effective date has been moved from the originally announced November 1. Currently, all cargo owners claim and pre-pay the fees, although those using clean trucks or rail are later reimbursed.

Port Board to Meet in the Evening Once a Month
News ImageOn October 19, the Port of Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners will hold its weekly meeting in the evening, rather than at its regularly scheduled afternoon hour, to make it easier for the public to attend. The Harbor Commission generally meets three times a month on Mondays, and is dark on the fourth Monday of the month. The first two meetings of the month will still be at the regular, 1 p.m.  Monday time slot.

Relief Package Leaves Port for Samoa Islands
News ImageFifteen shipping containers packed with dry foods, medicine, blankets and other essentials were loaded onto a ship at the Port of Long Beach today, October 14, and bound for victims in tsunami-stricken Samoa Islands. The effort was led by ILWU Local 13 and supported with in-kind donations from the Port of Long Beach, terminal operator International Transportation Service (ITS), and shipping lines Hamburg Sud and Polynesia Line.

Port, Army Corps To Begin Major Dredging Project
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on October 8 announced a $40-million harbor dredging project that will improve navigation by removing and relocating nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of sediment from the sea floor. The dredging work, scheduled to begin in March of 2010, is being partially financed by federal stimulus funding. The projects will support about 180 jobs a year during the next two years.

Port, BP Earn Prestigious Clean Air Award
News ImageSouthern California regional air pollution authorities on Friday, October 2, 2009, presented the Port of Long Beach with an award for becoming the first seaport in the world to construct an oil shipping terminal that offers clean "shore power" to improve air quality. Port and BP America officials accepted the honor from the South Coast Air Quality Management District at the agency's 21st annual “Clean Air Awards” ceremony in downtown Los Angeles.

Clean Trucks Program Marks First Anniversary
News ImageAt its one-year anniversary, the Port of Long Beach Clean Trucks Program is on track to nearly achieve its goal of an 80 percent reduction in diesel truck pollution, two years ahead of schedule. The Port's Clean Trucks Program started October 1, 2008, with the aim of dramatically slashing by 2012 air pollution from the thousands of trucks that haul cargo containers to and from Port shipping terminals. The centerpiece of the program is a progressive ban to phase out the oldest, highest-polluting trucks in favor of trucks that meet tough 2007 federal emission standards.

Board to Hold Evening Meeting Oct. 19

Imports Create Jobs, Boost Local Economy

More 'Shore Power' Coming to Port
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach has begun construction on its fourth "shore power" dock, to allow more ships to plug in to clean electricity and decrease pollution. Construction began recently at SSA Terminals/Matson Navigation Co.'s Pier C facility. The $6.5 million project broke ground in July. When completed next summer, the Pier C facility will become the fourth at the Port with shore power capabilities.

Half of Cargo Moved by Clean Trucks
News ImageFifty-two percent of the container cargo was trucked by 2007 or newer vehicles for the week ending July 21, 2009 -- already meeting the 2012 deadline required under the Port of Long Beach's Clean Trucks Program. The newer trucks emit 80 percent fewer air pollutants than older trucks.

Port Building Earns 'Green' Certification

Port Wins Award for Reducing Ship Pollution

Port to Test Emergency Public Address System

EPA Awards Port $4 million Air Quality Grant
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach received a $4 million air quality grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on July 8 to replace or retrofit, with less polluting technology, more than 100 forklifts, tractors, tugboats and other older diesel-powered equipment at the Port. The grant is part of $25 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funding to help California agencies reduce diesel exhaust.

New LNG Truck Fueling Station Now Open
News ImageClean Energy Fuels has opened a new LNG and CNG fueling station
at corner of Anaheim and 1st streets at the Port of Long Beach.

The station has two 25,000-gallon liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks, six LNG dispensers, and two compressed natural gas (CNG) dispensers and is open to trucks 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

This is the second station to serve the ports area for cleaner fuel burning trucks and the world's largest station of its kind.

Solar Ship Docks at Port of Long Beach
News ImageThe Port of Long Beach on July 1 welcomed the Auriga Leader, a car carrier ship partly powered by solar energy. It is a first-of-a-kind green technology application on a car carrier. 

The Auriga Leader is outfitted with 328 solar panels that can generate up to 40 kilowatts, decreasing demand on the ship's diesel-powered auxiliary engines for electricity thus cutting down pollution.

Sramek Named Harbor Commission President

The Commission also selected Mario Cordero as Vice President of the five-member Port governing board. Dr. Mike Walter was re-selected as Secretary, and Susan E. Anderson Wise was named Assistant Secretary.
