Harbor Commission Appoints New Security Director

Randy Parsons, a veteran of the TSA, FBI, to start November 5

October 12, 2012

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners on Monday, October 15, approved the appointment of Randy Parsons — a U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) executive and FBI veteran — as the Port of Long Beach’s new Director of Security.

Parsons starting November 5 will head up the Security Division of the nation’s second-busiest seaport. The Port of Long Beach has invested hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade security in the last decade with a combination of high-tech “domain-awareness” systems and highly trained personnel, including the Port’s Harbor Patrol. The Security Division also fosters cooperation among the law enforcement and security agencies in the port complex.

Parsons has had a distinguished and varied career in counterterrorism, transportation security, education and law enforcement. He joined the TSA as the Federal Security Director at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in March 2009. In August 2010, he moved into the same position at Los Angeles International Airport where he serves today. Parsons also has extensive experience in the private sector as a consultant on security and business continuity.

Parsons retired from the FBI in 2005 after 20 years of service. His last assignment was as the Special Agent in Charge for the Counterterrorism Program in the Los Angeles office. Prior to the FBI, Parsons practiced law and before that was a police officer in Topeka, Kansas.

Parsons is currently a member of the adjunct faculty at the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and a member of the Government Advisory Committee for USC’s Center for Risk and Economic Analysis of Terrorism Events. He was also a professor of criminal justice for Washburn University in Topeka.

The Port of Long Beach executive staff recommended Parsons after a national search to fill the position vacated by Cosmo Perrone, who retired in May 2011.
