Operations Director Explores Big Ships in Paper

October 13, 2014

Dr. Noel Hacegaba, the Port’s Managing Director for Commercial Operations, recently published a paper for the American Association of Port Authorities newsletter titled “Big Ships, Big Challenges: The Impact of Mega Container Vessels on U.S. Port Authorities.” In the paper, which discusses how port authorities like the Port of Long Beach must modernize themselves to accommodate large 14,000-18,000 TEU ships, Hacegaba argues that the mega vessels are the future of the maritime industry and ports must be well equipped if they want to compete for business. He adds that many smaller ports do not see the benefits of updating their infrastructure, since they will not receive high enough profits to justify the costs.
