Mitsubishi Cement Corp. is moving forward with plans to improve its Pier F cement import facility following a recent vote by the Long Beach City Council. On July 6, the council upheld the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners’ decision to certify the project’s final environmental impact report by rejecting challenges to the document. The project calls for increasing storage capacity to accommodate a growing demand for cement in a rebounding economy. A tenant since 2002, Mitsubishi temporarily suspended operations in 2010 in the wake of the recession. Pending completion of preliminary engineering work and approval by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, construction is expected to begin in 2016.
