Fiber-Optic Network to Upgrade Port Security
System enhances communications capacity among agencies

Contractors recently completed the first phase of a new fiber-optic communications network at the Port of Long Beach, a state-of-the-art, high-speed system that will link the security agencies that protect the Port.
With a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Port is installing a $12.2 million fiber-optic network throughout the harbor district to maximize the ability of the Port's Security Division and other local, state and federal security agencies to share data. Eventually the system will connect to Long Beach City Hall and with the Port of Los Angeles.
"Improving our ability to communicate with our security partners is an important step in enhancing security and planning for business continuity at the Port of Long Beach," said Port Security Director Cosmo Perrone. "We're among the first West Coast ports to have a fiber-optic network."
Keeping with the Port's Green Port Policy, the system is being installed with non-conventional, environmentally minded methods to minimize the impact of construction. The network will be expandable and adaptable as the Port upgrades its security technology and adds additional connections.
The first phase of the project connects the Port Administration Building with the new security command center on Pier F. Over the next 12-18 months, Tetra Tech, the contractor, will complete the basic network throughout the Port.
The network will be a regional asset, as security stakeholders will share data including feeds from surveillance cameras, sensors, and radar and sonar units.
