More Time for Public Input on Proposed Rail Facility

Port extends deadline for written comments to October 9

September 17, 2009

The Port of Long Beach has extended the period for written comments on a proposed On-Dock Rail Support Facility that would help increase the use of "on-dock" trains and reduce the need for local truck trips near the Port.

The public is invited to submit written comments until October 9. The previous deadline was September 25.

The Port has hosted two public hearings on the proposal; on September 2 at Long Beach City Hall and on September 16 at the Port Administration Building. The project is in the proposal stage. Suggestions and comments gathered during the hearings and from emails and letters will be considered in the drafting of a full environmental review of the proposed On-Dock Rail Support Facility.

The On-Dock Rail Support Facility is proposed for the northern area of the Port, on Pier B. It would be designed to reduce train bottlenecks and provide for greater use of on-dock rail. Loading and unloading cargo to and from trains within the Port significantly reduces trips by short-haul (drayage) trucks throughout the region.

The Port has released a "Notice of Preparation," on the proposal, the first step in the environmental review process.

The proposed On-Dock Rail Support Facility would potentially redevelop and expand an existing rail support facility in the vicinity of 9th Street and Pier B Avenue in the Port of Long Beach. Including new tracks, the new facility would stretch from the Alameda Corridor in the north end of the Harbor District to Ocean Boulevard at the Port.

Until October 9, please send written comments to:

Or email to: Cameron@polb.com

Questions can be directed to Stacey Crouch at (562) 590-4160.
