Baratta Named Risk Management Director

Former Mazda Executive Joins Port

August 4, 2006

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has named Richard S. Baratta, the former risk manager for Mazda North America, to a newly created position at the Port of Long Beach as director of risk management. The position was created as part of the Port’s reorganization plan to improve operational efficiencies.

Baratta will lead a reorganized division that centralizes the Port’s risk management programs, providing oversight in such areas as insurance, contracts, claims adjustments and more. Baratta will oversee a four-person staff and a $2.3 million budget that covers the Port’s liability, auto, property and travel accident insurance premiums. The division is part of the Port’s Administration and Finance Bureau, led by Managing Director Steve Rubin.

Baratta comes to the Port with more than 15 years of experience in the corporate risk management industry. Prior to working at Mazda, Baratta was the vice president of liability risk management at Pacific Capital Bancorp in Santa Barbara and the risk management director for Exel Logistics in Oxnard.

Baratta holds a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Azusa Pacific University and an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) certification.
