Container Cargo Volumes Continue Uptrend

Port posts modest gains in June; exports are up 9 percent

The Port of Long Beach continued to post modest gains in container cargo volume for the year with a 6.6 percent overall volume increase in June compared to a year ago. Imports were up 3.5 percent while exports rose by 9 percent compared to June 2010.

Port terminals handled 554,269 twenty-foot equivalent container units last month compared to 520,100 TEUs in June of last year.

Import containers accounted for 271,113 TEUs compared to 262,053 TEUs in the same period last year and export containers reached 126,588 TEUs compared to 116,112 TEUs in June 2010. Empty container moves were up 10.3 percent to 156,568 TEUs. Most empty containers are bound overseas for refilling.

Calendar year to date, overall container moves at the Port are up 6.2 percent. Imports are up 6 percent, and exports are up 4 percent.
