As a site sponsor for this year’s 23rd Annual La Gran Limpieza – the Great Los Angeles River Cleanup – the Port of Long Beach is looking for volunteers.
Who’s ready to help out?
The Port’s site is at the Willow Street Estuary, and the cleanup will be 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 28, 2012.
The Willow Street Estuary is located where the concrete ends and the freshwater of the Los Angeles River begins to circulate with the saltwater of the Pacific Ocean. This area features trees and other vegetation and a variety of birds. The estuary is an important habitat and vital in the cleanup process to help maintain water quality in the Long Beach harbor and surrounding area.
Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) will provide each volunteer with cloth gloves, whole fruit, snacks and water. Volunteers will also receive a free reusable grocery bag, T-shirt and raffle ticket on the day of the event.
Last year, 4,000 FoLAR volunteers pulled 25 tons of trash from 14 Los Angeles River sites in three hours. To learn more about the 2012 cleanup event, check out http://www.folar.org/.
To volunteer, please contact Alicia Gutierrez, Port of Long Beach Communications and Community Relations Division at (562) 283-7722 or firstname.lastname@example.org by April 16 for directions to event and more information.
